James S.
Hi there! How are you? I'm James. Do you have any questions about cameras? Or how about questions pertaining to lenses? How can I help you today?
I'm interested in the pros and cons of the Sony A 7 SII vs. Sony A 7 R II for shooting 4 K video.
Are you familiar with those cameras?
James S.
I'm somewhat familiar, let me pull them up real quick.
Alright!
So for video you definitely want the A7S II
I've heard that but are there reasons other than the low light sensitivity and resolution that the A 7 R II doesn't have?
James S.
It was built with videos in mind. It has some pro video features and the 4K quality is a little higher than the R. The R does take better photos, but the S does better video.
I'm transitioning from a Canon 5D Mark III. Do you think I'll be disappointed with the photo quality in comparison?
James S.
Being as I shoot with a 5DMIII myself, I would say yes.
Oh Boy, I guess I'll have to keep both.
James S.
This is definitely not a camera for photography if you're coming from a 5D, but the video will blow you away.
Does the Sony A 7 R II also have the 4:2:2 compression and 5 axis stabilization?
James S.
One second.
Would I need a gimbal like the DJI Ronin MX with either camera for video?
James S.
No, it doesn't look like the R has those extra features.
You don't NEED one of those but I can't lie, if you have the option of having one or not, I'd always go with one.
How is the quality of the Kipon adapter versus the Metabone's equivalent for the E to A?
Do you know if the Sony FS-5 has 5 axis stabilization?
James S.
I'll look up the adapters now.
Alright, so in a battle of metabones vs kipon, metabones is winning by quality and function.
As far as the FS-5, I don't know off the top of my head. I'll have to search that.
How much is the Metabones adapter for the A 7 S II? Do you lose anything in the conversion?
James S.
I believe it's $649, but I'll need to double check. Any loss is absolutely minimal with this particular adapter. Unnoticeable.
Should I even bother with any of the Sony lenses if I have a dozen really good prime and zoom Canon E mount lenses?
James S.
It was $479, my apologize. The canon to sony was $649.
If you've got good lenses already, I think you should get an adapter for them and use them.
It's still about 2X the Kipon price with the $ 50.00 discount but if it's noticeably better it's worth it.
James S.
Yeah, it beats Kipon on every front except for price.
I guess it's too late to reach anyone in the store but I could start the order online and see how much it will cost.
James S.
If you get the order in before 8pEST, we will try to have the order processed and ready for shipping by the end of the day.
You've helped me James. Thanks...
Any after market deals on batteries for the A 7 S II? What is the battery life?
Any deals on after market batteries for the DJI Ronin MX?
James S.
Let me take a look.
Stock you're looking at 4k recording time of 1hr20min
I hadn't shot a lot of video before so I don't know if that's typical. I just know the Canon 5 D Mark III battery is good for up to 700 stills.
James S.
Is that a stock or upgraded spec for the 7 S II?
James S.
stock spec
The battery I've included is a battery upgrade. We don't actually have any others at the moment.
What else would you suggest for me shooting video with the 7 S II?
James S.
I think down the line you'll want to get an external battery pack rather than replacement batteries.
Who makes them and what do they cost?
James S.
They're made by an assortment of companies and range from a couple hundred to several thousand.
I guess the market is getting pretty serious about the Sony 7 S II then.
James S.
That's just something you'll need to research and decide upon.
Thanks for your help James.
James S.
Of course, thank you!
