hello
Courtney B
Hi! How are you? I noticed that you were looking at the Sony a7?
yes
I'm going between the A7, A7s, and A7r
Courtney B
Ok!
What types of things do you shoot?
I'm a director, but don't use my own equipment to shoot videos very often...
Courtney B
Ok!
So do you primarily shoot video?
so while I want the functionality to do video for tests and personal projects, I think I want the camera resolution to be better for stills
Courtney B
Ok!
so, I'm narrowing this down I think to the A7r or A7
Courtney B
The a7S is best suited towards video, and the a7r is best for high resolution. The a7 is sort of the camera in the middle
I'm not a pro photographer
ok
Courtney B
So I'd personally recommend the a7 if you want to do some of each :-)
nice
does it also do the crop sensor mode like the A7r ii ?
Courtney B
Yes, it does
and how sensative is the iso compared to the A7s?
Courtney B
The ISO only goes up to 25,600
The a7S goes up to ISO 409,600
how far would I realistically take the A7s?
before I don't like the image
Courtney B
Let me take a look! I'm not quite sure offhand
It looks like ISO 12,800 is about the highest it goes before the quality is really affected
You'd want to stay closer to ISO 6,400 for the a7
ok... so I'm really dealing with 6400 vs 12,800
Courtney B
Correct
not 25,000 vs 409,000
Courtney B
Exactly
not bad
and then for lenses, would I get the vario lens?
Courtney B
I would recommend those, but there are also some great manual focus options if you don't mind that
Rokinon, Samyang, etc
I currently own the Gh3 with two Lumix zooms that are beautiful, and compact
Courtney B
Ok!
here's the thing, I want to be able to bring this on vacation easily
which is why I'm not going with a shutter
Courtney B
I see!
so... if I always took my Gh3 plus two zoom lenses (12-35 & 35-100)...
Courtney B
Yes! The a7 is a bit smaller in size compared to the Gh3
So you'd be at a similar size
and the lens is bigger though, right?
Courtney B
Correct
But overall, they'd balance eachother out
ok
so, what would you recommend in the range of like a 16-24 lens?
Courtney B
Yes, there aren't many f/2.8 options unfortunately
Let me see which you'd have
This is the only f/2.8 wide/standard zoom lens for the a7 currently
Sony JUST started introducing f/2.8 lenses. They have all been f/4 up until this lens and the 70-200mm f/2.8
ok, I'm wondering if with the high iso, the 4.0 isn't too bad though?
Courtney B
It's not too bad at all. I have a wide angle f/4 lens that I personally use. I went with the f/4 since I knew that I'd be primarily using it outdoors or in situations where I'd need to use a longer shutter or narrower aperture anyways
ok, for family photos though... at home, for dinner, etc, should I be concerned?
Courtney B
As long as you're not shooting in really dark rooms, I wouldn't be concerned
well... I'm already invested in the Gh3
Courtney B
Ok
if I just bought the wider zoom, 7-14mm, I'd have 3 zooms which covers a lot, and it's small and good
Courtney B
Definitely an option as well!
or, I sell all that, and get the A7, plus a new lens
and have this new system
Courtney B
Yep! And new systems are fun :-)
I believe the photos in the A7 are far superior, right?
Courtney B
They are superior
yeah, I know! :-)
I'm trying to be cautious though
that I'm not just excited
and therefore want a new toy
Courtney B
Absolutely! Have you considered renting an a7?
will I see a huge difference in the photos? They mainly now go on the web, and get printed at 8x10 max size
Courtney B
You'll see the biggest difference at high ISO's
...that's a good idea
Courtney B
It might not be a bad way to figure out if the difference is going to be enough for you to justify the switch
good idea
I think I'll do that
Courtney B
Ok!
is there a system where if I rent... that money can go towards the camera if I buy?
Courtney B
I'm not sure about that. You could try contacting Adorama rentals about this. I'm just not quite up to date on their policies.
ok thanks
Courtney B
No problem!
