I read the 100-400 lense was good. I always thought you needed a 2.8 lense or better for sports

It is highly recommended to have a 2.8 or better aperture for sports.
What is a better lense. the 70-200 2.8 or the 100-400 that is not 2.8

I wouldn't suggest anything else if you want to be able to shoot as it gets dark.

What is better for sports Nikon 500 or the Canon 7D?

The new Nikon shoot sports beautifully. I'm a Nikon shooter. However, Canon also shoots sports exceptionally well to. The bottom line is what lens you use and if the photographer understands camera settings and lighting.
I have been shooting a while, I have a D90 and some cheaper glass. Seems like the Canon is a better bang for the buck.
