Should I upgrade from a Canon EOS T3i camera body, or add a new lens first?

Shopper conversation with James S. on July 10, 2016

Sup so im having a hard time deciding if i should buy the Canon 6d or buy a nice lens. Im currently shooting with a canon t3i and i want to upgrade to full frame. However, my budget is limited so i can only afford to buy the 6d body or something like an L lens. Ive heard that buying lenses are a better investment but i also really want to go full frame. Im held back because of the 6d's low number of af points and mp. What's your opinion? should i buy a nice lens for my t3i or go for the 6d
also someone recommended me to buy a used 6d body since a 6d mk ii might come out in a few years and i might want to upgrade so the shutter count wont matter that much
is that a good idea?
James S.
I would buy the 6D. I started with a t3i myself and I am very glad I upgraded.
It made a world of adifference.
It's not a bad idea to buy used. I do that usually and I've never had any real issues.
How long have you been shooting?
for roughly 3 years
also, after the 6d, what would you do for your next investment (lens)
James S.
That really depends on what sort of photography you do. What do you primarily shoot?
And what lenses do you currently have?
Mixture of portraits and landscapes but more portraits
i just sold most of my EFS lenses for the full frame upgrade so im left with a 50mm 1.8 stm right now
James S.
I'd probably look at getting a 25mm or 35mm for your landscape photography.
do you think i would need anything wider? perhaps a 14mm
James S.
You wouldn't NEED anything wider, but it never helps to have an arsenal of lenses.
never hurts* haha
haha i see good point
James S.
I have an entire wishlist of lenses I'm working on getting.
Maybe do a 35, then do something wider after that? It might be in your best interest so you have some good variation.
ive been looking at the sigma 35mm 1.4 art lens
James S.
And I do recommend getting an 85mm for your portrait work down the line as well.
That's a good lens!
cool. since i cant afford all of these primes at the moment, would something like a 24-70 2.8 be a good overall lens for everything or should i just invest in primes now
James S.
That's honestly up to you. It's not a bad idea to start off with the 24-70 and buy the primes later on as your photography progresses.
alright then i think that'll be it. thanks for your help!
thanks!
James S.
We sell the body for $1269 though
It's an "open box" deal, which means there's some packaging damage but no product damage.
yea thats the one ive been looking at
James S.
I'd take advantage of that one if I were you. It'll save you a little money to put away towards lenses.
yea thats what ive been thinking too
alright then thanks

Enjoy your new camera!
