we have the NIkon d3300 available refrubished for 389.95
Is Nikon a higher grade brand than Cannon?

in the entry level cameras, they do give better image quality
ok, I don't know that much about dslr's

we ahve a used D40 for 139.00 for the body
that's an older camera, but it's less expensive
So, I'd have to buy a lens?

Are the lenses interchangeable( by brand) with different models?

you have to use NIkon lenses on a NIkon camera (or third party lens with a Nikon mount)
there are lens adapters to use canon lenses on a NIkon camera body, but you'll have to manually focus with those
we do have a used 18-55 lens for this camera for 74.00
for the difference in price, the refurbished d3300 is a much better camera though

they are inspected and rated according to theri condition

it's NIkon's current entry level camera.
It has a much higher resolution than the D40 and it has more features
it also has guide mode, which is a built in tutorial mode

I would first see if your instructor recommends any additional equipment. sometimes they want a lens with a wide aperture too
for the sale emails, watch your spam folder. that's where mine go :-)
