Hi! I'm Dan. How are you? Did you have a question on the DSC-hx3000?
HI Daniel, we are looking for a camera that can take great pictures of jewelry for posting on Etsy, Ebay, etc. so we need a macro focus feature. We bought a Canon 7100 but it is expensive and seems to bemore than we need.
Daniel H.
okay
This one is supposed to have macro, right?
Daniel H.
there are several options available.. if you are drawn to the hx3000 it would make a fine purchase..
yes it has a macro lens
as its minimum focus distance is a excellent 0.03 feet
or about a third of an inch!
you can put the camera close to your wares and use the zoom freely to get the image you want.. without worry as long as the focal point yuo want to take a picture of is beyond a third of an inch
you won't likely have any issue unless you have that piece right up abutt to the lens!
besides jewelry what else were you going to use the camera for?
well, not too much. Am not a photographer and usually the phone camera works fine for most things.
Are there any other options you can recommend or is this used model Sony Cybershot the best priced option?
Daniel H.
indeed -- I could peak around some
did you have a budget range that would be ideal for you?
Well under $300 would be great. My partner bought the Canon and is somewhat emotionally attached since he picked it out, but I think it is a waste since we have to buy the lens separately and it only focuses up to 6" away.
Daniel H.
depends on the Canon but as you said it may be more camera than required..
let me look around some
the sony was a very nice used camera.. so I take it you are okay with exceptionally well taken care of used equipment as well?
you will get more for your money there
yes
Daniel H.
okay
and point and shoots like the nice p&s one yuo looked at will get you the most for your money as you dont have to worry about lenses and changing them
one moment for some more ideas
Yes, point and shoot
Daniel H.
there is a 6x zoom .. slightly longer minimum focus distance of 2 inches
better shape (nearly perfect) for less than half the price
find a couple more I'd recommend checking out too
It has only 6x telephoto compared to Cybershots 50x though.
Daniel H.
yes.. however when doing marco up close you may not need more than around 5x .. unless you want to zoom in on small blemishes in jewerly
We need to zoom in on the 925 stamp which is pretty small on a lot of items. :-)
but 5x should still work...
Daniel H.
there is another sony
with 63x zoom.. better quality
(newer as in better quality)
All you areshowing me have macro, right?
Daniel H.
same min focus distance as other
yes they have a macro capability as they have a very short minimum focus distance
seeing what is in stock that may be the best suggestion I have.. the DSC-H400
How would you compare it with the HX300?
Daniel H.
same focus minimum.. slightly greater zoom .. less wear... slightly less money
ok. I appreciate your help. Let me speak with my partner. He will have to return the Canon to Best Buy, but we have 14 days. I like the Sony options.
Daniel H.
those should be a good fit for you!
just keep in mind our used inventory may change between now and a couple weeks from today :-)
but look for a sony HX-??? and you will find something very similar..
best to look for a E, E+ or D condition as those are our very best!
Ok, so HX indicates the short focus distance(Macro)?
Daniel H.
were there any other questions on macro photography I could help with? did you have lighting all setup?
oh it is a trim line of their point and shoot cameras
I have a light box, 20" cube and 2 lights... Not sure if it is the best, but we haven't started yet. Some people say that daylight is best anyway.
Daniel H.
sort os like saying a full sized car but no race car engine.. seats 4 people but has two doors.. etc
ok
Daniel H.
that will serve you well at the beginning
that light box.. and youll gain experience and when you are ready for something larger you'll know what to look for!
Since most of our stuff is a LOT smaller than the size of the box, I think we should be ok to start, too.
Thank you for your help, Daniel!
