Is the Nikon 50mm or 85mm lens a good upgrade to the kit lens on the Nikon D3300 camera?

Hello, welcome to Adorama how are you today? My name is Jeff, how can I assist you?
Lost in lens!
Jeff H.
Maybe I can help you. What are you looking for?
I have a Nikon D3300 which was given as a gift. Lovely camera but I'm a novice at all of this.
Jeff H.
What type of photography do you do most?
Trying to educate myself with the depth of field and apeture issues I'm told I'm having.
Everything.
Planning on using the camera for outdoor, indoor art shows, portraits of people at events.
I have the kit lens and was trying to figure out what is going ot work. Seems I just keep getting blurry pictures, not matter how much I open up the lens.
And if its low light its way worse. Even with a flash.
Jeff H.
What price range do we have to work with for a new lens?
Dude, I'm a teacher...lol! this Nikon 85mm f/1.8G AF-S FX Nikkor Lens was way on top of the budget.
But I'll invest if its going to last a while. My birthday is coming so...
Jeff H.
Was trying to figure out if it fit on my camera and if it was what In needed.
Jeff H.
If you do not have it already I would recommend to 50 mm instead. It is also 1.8 and works well in low lighting.
Truthfully I would pick up the 50 mm first then the 85 mm later if you need it. I think you will get more use out of the 50 mm on your camera.
ok. Can you explain the difference between the 50MM and the kit one? It says it 18-55MM. Though the f stop is 3.5-5.6
Jeff H.
50 mm is a fixed lens. There is no zoom but it works well in low lighting. It is a better lens than the lens that comes with the camera.
Other than you lose the zoom function in the lens and you need to move back and forth to frame the photo like you would with the 85 mm.
Got it.
So if I'm working with an outdoor shot with lots of natural light, what would you suggest?
Jeff H.
The 50 mm will work very well for that. Especially if you do not have much natural lighting to work with.
Cool. Looking on the site now. Nikon 50mm f/1.8 is listed but you guys have AF-S, AF. What's the difference?
Jeff H.
AF-S means the focus motor is built into the body. It is what your camera needs for autofocusing.
Your camera will not autofocus with lens that only have AF on them. Those are for a more professional body that has the focus motor built into the body as well.
Glad I asked.
Nikon 50mm f/1.8G AF-S Nikkor Lens, USA Warranty, Free Circular Polarizer Filter
Jeff H.
That is correct the one I linked as a free filter with it. And it was also much cheaper than the 85 mm.
There is the link again
Sorry, missed it, I'm trying to type and look at the site at the same time. Thanks! I can send the link out ot my husband to pick this lens up for me.
I got to ask - do you guys have a teacher or military discount?
Jeff H.
Yes but you have to be registered for it. You can go to our website under student/educators and get set up
Thanks so much for everything. Will do.
