This would be my top recommendation for something like that
how about one simply that is 50mm

The f/1.8 isn't optional. It's either f/1.8 or f/1.4
The f/1.4 lens is a bit more expensive
so my friend go one of these for 40 dollars

No not at all! This would be perfect for a beginner
The SL1 is developed for beginners since it's a very simplistic camera. The buttons are really streamlined and simple to use

The kit lenses do not provide very much bokeh at all

You can use that lens with any of the Canon DSLR cameras
