What is a good upgrade to the Tamron 60mm macro lens for use on the Nikon D5200 camera?

Hello, welcome to Adorama how are you today? My name is Jeff, how can I assist you?
Hi! My name is Valerie. I have a NIkon D5200 and am looking into getting a 90mm lens. Do you have any suggestions for which one to get?
Jeff H.
Are you looking for a macro lens or just a 90 mm lens in general?
I have a 60 mm lens that I use for portraits and macro. It's by Tamron. I would love to find a macro lens that I can use for portraits as well. Please forgive my ignorance. Is there a difference between a 90mm general lens and a macro lens?
Jeff H.
Most 90 mm lens I know are macro lenses in a Tamron would be a good choice
Do you know if Nikon makes a 90mm?
Jeff H.
Nikon does not make a 90 mm their closest would be the 105 mm macro
There is the 105 mm offering by Nikon.
Either lens would work very well for portraits as long as you have the room to move back and forth to frame your photo
When you don't have the ability to move back and forth, is that when you would use a Prime lens? Or what do you do then?
Jeff H.
Sigma also has an excellent
105 mm lens
If using a prime lens and do not have the room to frame the photo by moving back and forth that is when you switch lenses.
You already have the 60 mm so if that one does not get you close enough then you switch to something like the 105 mm lens to get you closer.
Ok. Which is better the 90mm or the 105mm?
Jeff H.
Personally I would go with the 105. But both are good lenses for what you are wanting.
A lot of people like the 90 mm as well.
You've answered all my questions. Thank you so very much. :-)
Have a nice weekend.
