It's really flattering and is going to give you a really pretty background
better than 50mm f1.8?

The longer the focal length, the shallower your depth of field will be and the more compressed that the background will be

The Canon is a sharper lens
I actually have this one myself. I need it for interiors but couldn't justify the cost of the 16-35
so you think its better than tokina 17-35

And they're both f/4. But the Canon is much sharper

I personally use a Black Rapid strap for more comfort. It's a lot easier on my neck
