i just have some questions
i bought my wife a canon 50mm f/1.8 lens.
she is being told from her photography school that that lens has a plastic lens.
how do you know if a lens has a plastic lens or a glass lens

the housing isn't all metal, but many lenses are not
the 50mm is not a bad lens at all
so from a quality perspective
which lens is of better quality, both being cannon
i know i have found the f/1.8 lens for $90

the f1.4 is a better lens
ok, is that simply because it has more groups and elements with in the lens construction
or is it because the focal length is much bigger.

so when the person was refering to the lens being plastic they were most likely refering to the body of the lens and not the physical lens itself?

what requirements do they have?
many (if not most) lenses have plastic in the housing
no requirements just that they said that they could tell from the photo that they had a plastic lens.

does she have a filter on the lens?
a Plastic filter will trash the image quality
a lot of people use filters to protect the front glass element on the lens
yes she has a plastic filter on the lens

the lens itself is a great lens for learning
you can get a glass filter, or just don't use one at all
you don't really need one
ok, we only put the uv or clear filter on to protect the lens glass itself.

can you recommend a good brand of filters and also a good cleaning kit

this is a good filter for it
or this is a glass fillter, just not as good quality as the b+w
