Hi! I'm Joao, how are you?
Any questions on the used recorders?
Yes or new. I am exploring a Field Recorder to integrate with my Nikon D5500 I bought from Adorama. Love the camera by the way. I am torn on the convenience and sound quality. Sound quality is especially important to me. I don't need allot of tracks. I don't need allot of gimmicks. But I hate noisy mic preamps, and poor quality headphone output. So far I had been looking at a range of recorders from the Zoom H6 to F8, and Tascam DR-701, all the way up to the Sound Designs 702. So as you can see, I have a wide range here. Mostly for run and gun video, and some concert gathering video.
Joao M.
oh ok!
I personally don't like the Zoom ones very much, they're mostly for consumer-level
if you want pro gear for audio recordings, I recommend the Tascam, as they have very good preamps
and the overall build quality is much better
I had looked closely at the DR-701D with the Magnesium chassis, better OP amps etc. I hear the line out going back to the camera is not so good. Don't know if that is an issue for me, but is a concern. Also the interface I understand is not so good.
Joao M.
that's a very good Tascam, very nice preamps on that one. The line out is alright, I haven't really noticed any issues with it. I don't own one, but I've used one before.
I love the form factor, and the convenience of integrating it with a cage or not. The DR-701D made allot of sense.
Joao M.
yea definitely, I think you would love this one
Reliability is a concern for me too. I understand the DR-70D is not so good. I go way back with Tascam and used their Reel to Reels with great success. Their Digital is an unknown quality too me.
Joao M.
Their digital stuff is great, I also used a Tascam A/D interface for a recording studio, it worked perfect and never had any issues with it.
if you want the best out there though, then the Sound Devices is what you want
like this one:
That is cool. I have a long background in electronics. Almost 50 years. Yeah, I know. So I don't tend to settle for less if I shouldn't. Sound quality as I said is very important. Also the recorder must be able to play my .wav or mp3 files without any Hyper Gliph stuff like Zoom does.
Joao M.
I see
Yes I was looking very closely at that one the 702. I want to buy this once, and call it a day. I need 2 mic inputs, with an occasional line input, I can always get a quality on site mixer later like the Sound Designs mixer if I need more. Make sense?
Joao M.
yea that makes perfect sense
Yea, Sound Designs is just the way to go
Sound Devices I mean
I guess I keep coming back to Sound Designs. I am wondering since I would be recording with .wav, do I still have easy sync with my video in post in say Lightroom? Oh yeah, my bad Sound Devices.
Joao M.
yea the syncing should be flawless
so I don't have to use BWF because of its timecode then. I am an old hound in audio, but relatively new to video creation and editing so thanks for the patience.
Joao M.
glad to help! :-) and yea modern video editing is fine with wav files, for example FCPX will do fine with wav files
no issues there
it used to be you had to have specific audio formats for video, not so much anymore though
Very cool, I am running Win 10, and an i7 processor, so crunching audio and video should not be a problem.
Joao M.
awesome!
I know you will love this 702 though
Maximum video resolution will be 1080p. No 4K as of yet. Waiting for a dedicated camera for that.
Joao M.
Sounds like that computer would be perfect for 1080p.
Okay. If I intend to get a 4K camera later, should I consider the 702T. I don't know if I'll need the timecode.
Joao M.
hmm, I'm not sure on that. Let me find out
Most likely will be a GH4 or similar. The cinema 4K cameras a beyond my reach mostly.
Joao M.
nice
It looks like utilizing timecode for 4k video can be an extremely efficient and time-saving
I would not be doing documentary style, but short vignette features for friends etc. But quality in audio is what is important. You know, million dollar video, nickel audio.
Joao M.
oh I see, then it sounds like you would be fine with just the 702, no need for the 702T
That 702 definitely is one of the best recorders out there, if you want perfect audio quality, then you would be very happy with the 702
Very cool. I appreciate your help. I now have a proper course. Thank you.
Joao M.
you're very welcome! If you have any other questions let us know ok? glad to help!
Will do. Have a great 4th.
Joao M.
thanks! you too!
