Eric T.
hello! my name is Eric how can I help?
do you have a question about the 5d?
Hi Eric
i live in Ethiopia and doing masters in film production. i want to buy video equipment... on a budget
any recommendation...
Eric T.
sure, do you have a price range I can start with?
upto 2000
used is fine.
Eric T.
ok
and i am going to use it mostly for video.
if possible a bundle with memories, batteries, light and sound will be great
Eric T.
Here is a bundle that comes with sounds and memory and a lens/camera
we will have to find the lights seperately but we are still below 2000
And Here are some softboxes I reccomend
are these rechargeable or do i have to use electricity
Eric T.
The softboxes have to be plugged in I believe
can you check if they are 220 v. the electricity is european standard. not 110 v like the US.
Eric T.
Yes ill check that
they may not be
70D can i use it for feature film?
Eric T.
You may want to consider a black magic if you want really professional quality
Tons of sundance shorts use it
oh..ok
back in Ethiopia, everybody is obsessed with 5d mark 111.
Eric T.
also a good camera,
Great for video as well as pictures
the black magic is better for video only I think
so the BM do i need multiple lenses?
Eric T.
You can get more than one but its not a requirement
if i were to ask your opinion which one would you suggest the 5d mark 3 or the BM for video?
Eric T.
Definitely the BM for Video Only. the canon doesnt even have 4k as far as I am aware
cool.
does the BM also shoot on 1080? because most output devices definitely in Ethiopia do not have 4k?
Eric T.
Yes you can shoot in 1080, the thing about 4k though
is you can crop video without losing quality
makes post work much easier
if you crop a 1080p video you are gonna lose some resolution, which is why it's usefull
i got you. so you are saying i can use it back home
Eric T.
Its useful anywhere I think.
how is the battery life? and will it fit the standard tripod/monopod
Eric T.
Yes it will fit standard tripods
im checking on the battery life
when did this technology come out?
Eric T.
Black magic?
yes?
Eric T.
Its pretty recent. the company is black magic
great. i like the fact that it is not bulky
Eric T.
It is a very cool camera :-)
and the battery life is Approximately 1 hour 10 minutes by the way
i think you have convinced me.
oh ok. is the battery inbuilt?
Eric T.
No, you need a battery pack
and you can buy extra batterys of course
excellent.
Eric T.
Also back in on the soft-boxes, they wont work in 220v without an adapter
ok... that is a no no because i tend to forget the adapter and i have blown up a few appliances...
Eric T.
Ok, ill try to find another one
so can you also work a bundle to go with the BM? light & sound
what kind of memory does it take
Eric T.
SD cards I think
actually wait
that may be incorrect
take your time...
Eric T.
Yes it does use SD cards, you can also use an SDD rig I believe
I Also pulled up some 220v lights
Unfortunately the price goes up a little.
ouch... i see that..
Eric T.
There may be some others, still checking
ok..
Eric T.
this will do the trick I think
multi voltage
yep... does it come with the stand?
Eric T.
yes
just curious do you think it will fit in my suitcase. it is a regular size one.. if the stand is retractable
Eric T.
well it does retract, so I should think if you pack it well enough
is it one or three (like the picture)
Eric T.
You get three
3 x Interfit F5 Heads
15 x 32W Fluorescent Lamps (INT042)
3 x Power Cables
Three 24 x 36" (60 x 90cm) Softboxes
2 x 7.5' (2.3m) Light Stands (COR750)
1 x 10' (3m) Light Stand (COR752)
1 x 30-55" (75-140cm) Max. Boom Arm
1 x Nightstand Boom Clamp
1 x Counterweight Bag
Interfit Photographic 1-Year Limited Warranty
you also get a bag I think
Ok.
let me ask you. the new technology is LED yes? should i get LED too?
Eric T.
I took a look at the LED section while I was searching
yes LED's are new and pretty cool, but the price is rough
one of the problems i have is when shooting out on location, electricity might not be readily available like in the US. plus there is fluctuations in the electric current which can damage your equipment. so i think even if it is expensive, i should consider the LED ones
what do you think
Eric T.
sure
let me pull some up though
I would start with these, although they are on backorder right now
are they battery run?
Eric T.
No they arent
220v?
Eric T.
Here is a better one for this
it is battery powered, it does not specify the voltage though
These lights are a little weak in comparison though
Oh? weaker than?
Eric T.
The other set I reccomended
Ok. i got you?
Eric T.
YEs
*yes
the last one you showed me is a single one, yes?
Eric T.
Yep
you are not kidding about the price bieng rough for the LED's
Eric T.
Yes there is a big leap with the LED's
are the batteries rechargeable on the last one you showed me?
Eric T.
Yes of course
excellent.
Eric... let me ask you a quick question. this chat i can save it for later to read up on some of the recommendation. can it be saved?
Eric T.
Only by Copy-pasting.
you are welcome to do that though.
i should do that... because you are giving me a lot of info.
so can we go on... or am i hogging your time
Eric T.
Its no problem
ok... so i am trying to get all my basic stuff to start shooting. just the basic stuff for now... so now that we have discussed lights, can we discuss sound...
Eric T.
Sure
So you are intending to use on-location sound right?
yes.. how is the mic on the camera?
i am sure it needs external equipment
Eric T.
I wouldnt use it apart from a reference
A boom mic is probably a good place to start
ok
Eric T.
sorry for the wait here, just looking through what we have
sure no prob
Eric T.
so our options are either on-camera mic mount or a shotgun with a boom pole
Do you think you will consistantly have someone to hold the mic?
yes
the revo that is mounted on the camera do you think it is powerful enough to pick up audio
which one is more powerful
Eric T.
a shotgun on a pole will be better most always
you can get closer to the sound source
absolutely
Eric T.
if you can afford the extra price, the rode mics are standard
are your prices competitive ?
Eric T.
Depends on the item/deals going on at the moment
so the rode mic you just showed me, does it also go on the camera?
Eric T.
No, that wouid need a boom pole
ok
so the sound is recorded directly on the camera memory?
Eric T.
Yes, you can use the external mic inputs on the BM
in this arrangement i don't need the zoom H4N
Eric T.
No, you wouldn't really
cool.
what else do i need? a tripod? reflectors maybe?
Eric T.
Let see. Camera, Lights, Sound, Just a tripod will get you started
great...
Eric T.
it is actually 84 bucks when i went for detalils
Eric T.
Yes, I can grab a cheaper one too if you like?
i hope it is sturdy, don't want to drop the most expensive equipment of the lot
Eric T.
The other one is more sturdy.
let's go with that then. i just need it to fit into my suitcase.
Eric T.
actually, we may be able to bundle the tripod with the camera
ok. so question about the camera. if i want telephoto
Eric T.
will other lenses from other e.g.. canon lenses fit on the BM
Eric T.
if you can get an adapter for the MFT lens mount yes
anything that uses mft will work without one
what is MFT?
Eric T.
micro four thirds
its a lens mount type
ok
Eric T.
I wasnt able to bundle both lens and tripod unfortunately
one more question... is BM hard to learn. i am completely new to this camera
Eric T.
No, its pretty easy to use
Of course there is a lot of depth once you get into it
ok...
thanks for all the info. i was so close to buying the 5d. i am glad i talked to you.
Eric T.
the 5d isnt a horrible mistake either :-p
i know. but i think given the price/later technology and less bulkiness
the BM is better
Eric T.
I think so as well.
is it possible to have a breakdown and total for the items we discussed.
i also tried to copy the chat we have but can't copy it...
Eric T.
sure. which light did you end up wanting? the led or the others?
LED
Eric T.
ok
all the items are listed in the sidebar by the way
where it says ideas?
Eric T.
suggested items
how can i save it?
Eric T.
http://www.adorama.com/bmmsc4... for the camera the one iisted is not shwoing the lens bundle
I dont think there is a way to do that :-(
you mean the 1295 price does not include lens
Eric T.
the total price is about 1800 before shipping
the total price is about 1801.00 before shipping
It does, its an accesory kit
where are you located?
i am currently in Arlington, VA
Eric T.
The adorama store is in NYC
I am coming to NYC august 8. is it possible to pick it up
Eric T.
You will have to call the store to see if they have everything in stock. sometimes the website operation differs
Oh...that is right...
is there warranty?
Eric T.
the Blackmagic Design 1 Year Limited Warranty for the camera yes
k
Eric T.
the mic also comes with a 1 year also
cool
bag included?
Eric T.
for which piece?
camera bundle
Eric T.
No the camera does not come with a bag
Any DSLR Bag will do great though
ok
so 1800 is within budget for me... i could also add extra batteries/charger/memory card i believe
Eric T.
yes, do you want me to ad one/both to the list?
both
Eric T.
how large of a card?
64
sorry two 32 gb
Eric T.
ok
so the battery the bm uses is a standard canon compatible
just in case you are confused about that
great
Eric T.
and just order the 32gb card in a quantity of 2
ok
ok
OK... so let me go over all the info you gave me and will order the stuff this evening.
Eric T.
of course.
thank you Eric... you educated me lots. appreciate it.
Eric T.
sure. Thanks for chatting! good luck with the equipment too
take care buddy
