Hi! Welcome to Adorama! How are you today? My name is Anne. How can I help you?
HI! ARe you shopping for a flash today?
Yes, I was looking at the Flashpoint Zoom TTL R2 Flash With Integrated R2 Radio Transceiver - Canon. I wanted to know how it is different than the Flashpoint Zoom Li-on R2 TTL On-Camera Flash Speedlight For Canon. While the latter says it is for "on camera" it also says it can transmit radio controls to remote flashes. The former is a "transceiver" which would mean it can transmit to remote flashes via radio and also be the remote flash. They sound the same to me, except the on-camera version sounds like it will not act as the remote flash. If that is the case, why would it cost more than the transceiver?
Anne A.
the only difference is the battery used
the one marked zoom li-on uses a li-on rechargeable battery
the other used AA batteries
they both function exactly the same
Okay, now I understand that one uses a rechargeable battery and the other uses AA batteries. So, they can both act as the on-camera master unit or can act as a remote off-camera flash? So they are both transceivers?
Anne A.
yes
Recently, I was using a set of Canon 600EX-RT Speedlites and realized they are not fully compatible with cameras manufactured before 2012. They will not perform all of the group functions with pre-2012 cameras. Are either of the previously-mentioned Flashpoint flashes fully compatible with all Canon digital cameras, pre-2012 or post-2012?
Anne A.
they are compatible, but let me check how many groups they can control
it will do up to 5 groups
it can do 3 groups through the caon ETTL II system
In what situations can I control 5 groups? Regular TTL? Manual?
Anne A.
yes TTL or manual, or a combo of TTL and manual
Okay, can I control 3 groups of ETTL II, and two other groups of TTL or Manual?
All at the same time?
Anne A.
No. I believe it's ETTL II OR TTL/manual
Okay. Are both the li-on and AA battery Flashpoint versions compatible with each other. In other words, could I mix and match the different flashes and have them communicate with each other?
Anne A.
yes.
you can use the Canon brand flashes too, with the R2 receiver on them in the same system
Okay, just to be clear about the compatibility issue I asked before because it's really important. I have a Canon 1D Mk II which was manufactured probably around 2008. My camera will be able to control the Flashpoint flashes with R2 radio control (with one on-camera, of course).
Anne A.
I don't have any info that says it won't work with older camera bodies
you could contact customer service to be sure
Okay, I have a few other questions.
Okay. Thanks.
Anne A.
you're welcome!
I also have a Flashpoint monolight strobe. I currently use a pocket wizard to fire it remotely. Assuming the pocket wizard won't work with the Flashpoint transceiver flash, can I buy something that will allow me to use the transceiver flash, remote flashes and strobe together?
Anne A.
you can use a r2 recevier on the strobe
you'd just attach it with a pc sync cord
can you send me a link to that product?
Anne A.
sure!
That's great, but do you happen to have one that does not do E-TTL? My strobe would not be capable of that anyway.
Anne A.
no. that is the only receiver for the r2 system
Okay, that works just fine.
Anne A.
ok :-)
The Flashpoint flashes have a GN of 127 feet when zoomed in at 200mm. Can you tell me what the GN would be zoomed all the way out, both with and without the diffuser card?
Anne A.
I don't have that info but customer service might
Okay. Here's just a basic photography question: The GN is lower than Canon's 600EX-RT or Yongnuo's 600EX-RT, but couldn't I effectively increase the guide number by simply using two Flashpoint flashes in the same location instead of one?
Anne A.
yes
Does the R2 receiver (the one you sent the link to) also work with any standard non-radio flash, effectively turning that flash into a radio controlled flash?
Anne A.
yes it does
but it will only do ttl on a flash that is TTL
Cool!
Anne A.
it's a nice system!
Okay, this is my last question, unless I think of others (and it's likely I will). I started looking into the flashes because of your $20-off sale the other day. I missed the sale because I had too many questions! How often do those flashes go on sale?
Anne A.
they go on sale fairly often but we dont get any notice of when they'll be on sale
are you signed up to receiver the vip emails?
there are sales emailed out through there a lot
I think I am signed up. Would you say there is a sale on this particular product once a year, several times a year, every month?
Anne A.
I'd guess every couple months, but that's just a guess
Do you have any more questions? Or is there anything else I can help you with today?
I might be able to wait that long. That's very helpful. Thank you. I think that is all the questions I have.
Anne A.
ok :-) if you have any more questions, click in to chat!
have a good day!
