you can get them with a flash trigger built in if you use pocketwizards
and some have a touch screen
I also have the speedlite st-e3-rt

the light meter will work with any light source. you just have to trigger the light for the meter to read

that cold shoe is a little more secure than a typical screw-tightening cold shoe
I would like to setup portable on the go lighting group including umbrellas

that sounds like a lot of parts, but it's really not a bad setup.
the swivel knuckle slips right into the top of the light stand, and you can have the cold shoe already attached to it
what size umbrellas do you want?
I would like to keep subject about 10-12ft from flash

that is 40", but you can get bigger too.
but if you'll be shooting outside, I wouldn't go much bigger. it'll blow over easily
